Honestly, could have been worse. Hopefully by next week I’ll have this thing fixed up enough to really drive it.

That’s actually not that bad. The driveshaft bearing is puzzling though, how could the previous owner drive the car with that thing being toast and not realize it?

I’ll answer your question indirectly. This car has a replacement engine. When I questioned him on what happened to the old one he said it developed “a rattle”. He thought it was the clutch, so he replaced it. No dice. Maybe a rod knock? No metal in the oil. What a mystery. So he put in a new engine.
I asked if he ever checked the VANOS, since VANOS rattle is one of the most well known BMW problems to ever exist.
He had not.
